About the American English Institute (AEI)

Where is the AEI located?

The AEI is located in the heart of the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Oregon. The Eugene metro area population is 250,000, which makes it the second largest city in Oregon.

Where is the closest airport?

Eugene (EUG) airport is about a 15-minute drive from campus.

How do I get around Eugene?

Eugene has an extensive public bus system and bike path network. Students use the LTD-EMX bus to and from home. Students can rent bikes through the Outdoor Program on campus.

Is Eugene and campus safe?

Eugene is a relatively safe college town where people are very friendly. The UO campus has its own communication network and on-campus police.

When will I take my English placement test?

New students take the College Board Accuplacer test during orientation week. This test determines your course of study.

When do I register for classes?

Class schedules are given during Friday of orientation week.

What is the average length of study at the AEI?

This depends on student placement, academic effort, and success.

Can I defer my enrollment?

The application fee is good for one year; however, official bank statements are only valid for six months. If you choose to defer your enrollment, please e-mail aei@uoregon.edu to explain your circumstances.

Is there a fee for deferring?

The AEI will charge $45 for each express mailing of admission documents.

About the University of Oregon (UO)

How many students study at the UO and how many are international?

In 2012, there were 25,000 UO students, 10 percent of whom (2,500) are international from more than 90 countries.

Does the UO offer scholarships for international students?

Does the UO offer conditional admission?

Yes, conditional admission is available for all qualified undergraduate students.

What are the UO's undergraduate test score requirements?

- TOEFL minimum score: 61/500

- IELTS minimum score: 6.0

- SAT: 480 on the critical reading section

Does the UO offer graduate level Conditional Admissions?

Application for admission is a two-part process. Students must apply to both the university and the department.

Questions about the IEP Application

What is required to apply to the IEP?

Remote IEP Admissions Requirements:

Valid government sponsored identification.
Submit PDF application to aei@uoregon.edu.

IEP (on-campus) Admissions Requirements:

Provide a transcript showing proof of successful completion of high school (or higher) with good standing.
Demonstrate preparedness for academic success.
Students transferring from another U.S. institution need a transfer form from the institution they are attending.
Pay an application fee of $110 USD.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Requirements:

Valid passport
Appropriate visa for study in the United States
Demonstrated financial capability to study and live in the United States during the entirety of studies

I missed the deadline. Can I still apply?

Do I need to apply to both the AEI and UO?

Only students interested in undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon should complete the UO International Student Application. The UO and AEI Admissions will coordinate your Conditional Admission. If you are a Short-Term Exchange student with the AEI and do not plan to take any university level classes, complete only the AEI Application. If you have a bachelors and are coming to the AEI as part of your pre-academic English training, complete the AEI Application.

How accessible is the University of Oregon for students with disabilities?

The AEI welcomes international students of all abilities. Classrooms, residence halls, and most other buildings at the University are wheelchair accessible. The Eugene community provides ramps and accessible bathrooms in most stores, restaurants, and theaters. Local bus and train transportation is also wheelchair accessible. Does the UO offer graduate-level conditional admission?

Graduate admissions is decentralized, graduate level degree or certificate program applicants must contact the school or department directly. Conditional Admission: If you already have an undergraduate degree and want to earn a second undergraduate degree or take only undergraduate level coursework at the UO, you may apply for admission as a post baccalaureate undergraduate student and go through the regular Conditional Admission process.

What is the AEI refund policy?

You may receive a full refund if you cancel with an AEI International SEVIS Advisor prior to the first day of classes. All other refunds are calculated from the date you offcially withdraw, NOT the date of your last class attendance

SEVIS AND Visa Questions

Can I come to the IEP on a B1/B2 visa?

No, to study at the IEP students need to be on an F1/ F2 or J1/J2 visa. If you are on a different visa and would like to explore studying at the AEI's IEP, please contact us by email at aei@uoregon.edu.

I am already studying in the United States. Do I need a new I-20?

To be eligible for transfer a student must be in status and currently attending a U.S. school full-time. If you are eligible, the AEI works with you and your school to transfer your SEVIS record to the AEI.

What should I do if I have already been accepted to the AEI, but need to postpone my arrival to a later term?

The AEI can defer acceptance for up to three terms. We request that students inform AEI Admissions as soon as possible. Credit card payment will be required for mailing of new I-20.
